CCI Orientation Puts Spotlight on Gender, Disability Inclusivity
Columban College, Inc. (CCI) opened the middle of the first semester on August 13, 2025, with a message on breaking stereotypes and embracing diversity, centering its semestral general orientation on the theme Beyond Stereotypes: Cultivating Gender and Disability Sensitivity among Columbanites.

“This year’s theme challenges us to see beyond labels and embrace inclusivity,” said keynote speaker Deanne Recitas, a recent CCI graduate now serving at the Barretto Campus.

Her message underscored the college’s commitment to inclusivity, reminding students that “being inclusive is part of who we are as Columbanites.”

At the Asinan Campus, Johanna Valenzuela of the Guidance and Testing Center (GTC) stressed that gender sensitivity is not a “one man act” but a collective effort.

She explained that while the concept is broad, it can be put into practice by respecting boundaries and identity, and by recognizing that every gender is equal to one another.

The messages resonated with students.

“Ang gandang panimula ng talk about gender sensitivity since we are living in a more opened society and as young adults, we have to be gender sensitive sa mga pronouns leaning towards gender neutral ones,” said Political Science sophomore Yesha Mendoza.

Organized by the Office of Student Affairs (OSA) in coordination with the Inter-Departmental Coordinating Council (IDCC), the event combined social awareness with practical guidance.

Representatives from various campus offices introduced their roles and services to help students navigate the academic year.

“It’s well-presented and organized,” said BSCE freshman Atheisia Miel Dumangas. “I liked the way they introduced the different offices and programs the institution offers. The speakers’ messages inspired and encouraged me to do more and be my best.”

The orientation was attended by freshmen, transferees, shifters, and continuing students, with Architecture, Engineering, and Nursing students meeting at the Barretto Campus Gymnasium, while Arts and Sciences, Education, Business and Accountancy, and Computer Studies students gathered at Convery Hall in the Asinan Campus.

Political Science senior and IDCC officer Heather Marielle Ramos said that while the dual-venue setup required splitting manpower, it improved accessibility and allowed more students to benefit from the sessions.

BS Architecture senior and performer Althea Mae Gonzales praised the clarity of the presentations, noting changes in the format and the inclusion of snacks.

Communication freshman Kyla Pamugas shared that the event made her aware of the services she could access in CCI.

Intermission performances by selected students and the Kaisahan Folkdance Company added a celebratory atmosphere, underscoring the theme of unity and diversity.
